Chairs, Flags and an Election Night

On the morning of 25 October 2026, people in Belgrade waited in lines outside polling stations. Police cordons were set up in the city centre, and uncertainty grew as voting drew to a close. A few hours later came news of the Students' List's victory. Streets controlled by police during the day filled with people celebrating, waving flags and driving through the city.

These 68 photographs follow Belgrade from Dušanovac and Stari grad to Terazije, Slavija and Pionirski Park. In the evening, citizens entered the area known as “Ćacilend”, removed barriers, carried away chairs and dismantled tents. Some took the chairs through the streets as souvenirs. One photograph shows a man carrying a white chair on his shoulder and raising three fingers in front of the illuminated National Assembly building. The images capture the celebrations and the destruction that accompanied them.

The following day, 26 October, residents, volunteers and municipal workers cleaned Pionirski Park, removed the remains of the tent encampment and tended the green spaces. The gallery accompanies Avangarda's photo report “From Police Cordons to 'VICTORY': Belgrade on 25 October” and documents two days during which the appearance and use of the city centre visibly changed.

Between the first minutes of silence and the electoral victory on 25 October came months of blockades, long walks, conversations, confrontations, disappointment and persistence. For me, that period was also an opportunity to reconsider my own belief that those in power could only be removed through violent rebellion. It turned out that we could have learned far more from history than we thought.
